Convincing you to read ‘It Ends with Us’ by Colleen Hoover
His voice cracks when he says, “You are my wife. I’m supposed to be the one who protects you from the monsters. I’m not supposed to be one.”
I’m no professional book reviewer, but I know a good book when I read one, and “It Ends with Us” clearly exceeded my expectations. At first glance, I had the impression that this beautiful book, written by Colleen Hoover, was a contemporary romance novel, with a typical protagonist and his/her love interest, thrown in a few complications, challenges, and plot twists, and boom! It’s one of the New York Times bestsellers.
That is exactly what I assumed when I first got my hands on this book. I thought of it as a typical but amazing romance novel, filled with the craziest characters, brilliant character development, and an intriguing plot. I was casually scrolling through my TikTok recommended videos when I came across several BookToks (Book TikTok videos), indicating I should get the book and read it as soon as possible. I was convinced and ran to my local bookstore to get my hands on one of the most anticipated romance novels of the year.
Well, I was wrong.
This book isn’t your usual “romance” fiction dealing with two lost souls finding their soulmates or the heart-gripping tale of a romantic tragedy. This book deals with much more than just romance.
The main slogan book itself says that “Sometimes the ones who love you the most are the ones who hurt you the most.” This is a casual and common quote, but as soon as I finished reading the last page, I knew exactly what Colleen meant by it. The cover shows a picture of a lily, a common flower, and the flower, according to the book, is shattered into pieces, which denotes a very strong relationship with the book and will leave you in tears once the meaning behind it strikes you.
The story starts with a woman named Lily Bloom, a passionate businesswoman who had come a long way from her childhood, graduated in Maine, and bumps into a gorgeous neurosurgeon, Ryle Kincaid. Their first meeting and relationship are too good to be true, and Ryle is the man anyone would die for. However, there is one problem: Ryle’s theory of committed relationships is quite disturbing.
Everything seems fine with Lily and Ryle until thoughts of her first love, Atlas Corrigan, and a link to her past join her, and suddenly, he reappears in the very town she lives in, threatening the string that holds Ryle and Lily together, and suddenly, their relationship is questionable.
Once again, this book isn’t a romance novel and has a typical ending. It deals with topics that are not suitable for the light-hearted. This is Colleen’s first genre classic, and she is the very reason that lit my reading spirit again after several months of errands. I could not put it down. Once you read this book, it is hard to let go of and will have you invested in it like no other book before. It will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions, break your heart much worse than heartbreak, and make you question your ability to love someone the way you think they deserve. Colleen Hoover has put in raw emotions, inspiration, and integrity all in one book. It’s my favourite book recommendation for 2022 and by far my favourite novel of all Colleen’s stories.
The best part isn’t over yet. ‘It Ends With Us’ is coming with a long, anticipated sequel, ‘It Starts With Us’, which is set to be released on October 18th, 2022, and I’ve never been so ready for the release of a sequel to the book that raised the bar.
